Surface Piercings & Microdermals
So basically, as there is no 'upward' pressure on the piercing from the likes of say a belly bar or curved barbell, there is less chance that the piercing will migrate through the skin. The piercing has no pressure on it at all from any angle - not from the bottom, the sides or the top - thereby giving it the chance to settle and heal. Obviously constantly knocking or banging the piercing (i.e. not looking after it properly) is not giving it the best possible chance to heal and of course there is always the aftercare programme to follow, but if all these are not adhered to the results may not be so favourable. Surface piercings are also quite versatile and can be placed almost anywhere on the body and can be a stunning addition to anyone's body art. It is worth considering though where you want to place your surface piercing if you have definitely decided it's the piercing for you because as previously mentioned they do tend to fair best if they are not in a place that is a high movement area, or at high risk of knocks and bangs.
Below are some pictures of surface piercings that we found on another body piercing website and it is quite clear to see from these images why these surface piercings are not likely to have a favourable outcome. To be honest also, we believe surface piercings to be stunning and add to our body art, but these surface piercings don't even look that nice and I know for sure that I wouldn't want one if it was going to look like these ones below!
Microdermals So, what can we tell you about microdermals? Well, they are a fairly new concept in this country (at time of writing) but have been around for some time in America which in turn of course means that they reach us eventually! We were sceptical about them at first because of course the horror stories always reach you before anything else and there were plenty of those, but on indepth research we found that actually the horror stories were not factual and were mostly nothing more than 'playground gossip' and so decided we would also offer this service to our customers. There is really only two main differences between surface piercings and microdermals and they are: 1) Microdermals are single point piercings (i.e there is only one piercing hole at the site as opposed to two) 2) Microdermals are designed to be permanent. Once, healed though there are many different tops that will screw into your microdermal base so although it is permanent the top can be changed so that you can have a different look when you want it - but it really is best to wait for it to heal before you decide to change the top. Placement of your microdermal is also well worth considering, whilst it is fair to say they can be placed almost anywhere, it really needs time to settle and constantly knocking or banging it will not help at all and in the early days a good yank may well pull it out altogether and if this happens there isn't any way really that it can be put back in - so make your choice wisely! Microdermals can make great additions to tattoos, they can be placed in eyes of a tattoo for example or in the centre of a flower to enhance its beauty. If you prefer not to place them in a tattoo they look great on their own or with a number of others making a design all of their own for example.
So, how do they work? As you can see from the diagram below (which isn't to scale!) the anchor base is placed under the skin and the attachment top screws into the anchor base. The base looks massive here, but they are absolutely tiny. The base has little tiny holes in it so that as it heals, the tissue will also grow through the tiny holes, thereby anchoring it in place and making it permanent. This is the reason why you really shouldn't try to change the attachment top until it has had time to heal and 'anchor'.
